SurveyMonkey – A step by Step guide to creating your first survey

If you want build strong relationship with your clients, then ask them. What’s their biggest pain or frustrations?

Help them solve their problems.

They say feedback is the breakfast of champions.

To make sure you’re aligned with your clients, survey them.

The easiest way to do this is by, setting up a free account with surveymonkey.com another cool Social Media Marketing Tool.

Here a step by step guide, to help you set up your first Survey.

Step 1 Go to Surveymonkey.com

Click on the link to SurvyMonkey and it will take you the home page.

Step 2 Join SurveyMoney.com

On the left hand side, you’ll see an orange button “Join now for Free!” click the button and fill out the form to set up your account.

  • When you’re finished hit the Create a new account button
  • Fill in details

Step 3 Create First Survey

Now you’re set to go. So it’s time create your first survey

On the top toolbar, you’ll see Create Survey

Then you have the choice of

  • Copy Existing Survey – if you already have built a survey, then you can clone them
  • Use a survey template – only available on the paid version

Create a new survey from scratch – So that’s what we going to do

Step 3 create first survey in SurveyMonkey

  • Enter a title for this survey ( max 100 characters)
  • Create Survey button

Step 4 Choose Theme

  • There a list of about 12 themes changes colours
  • I’m using Spring Day

Step 5 Add a Question

Type in your survey question

  • You need to Select a Type of Question from the dropdown box
  • Place your Question in the box

Select the type question you want to ask Survey Monkey

This allows you to format your question and how you want it to look and also it determines how People answer the question

For this example, I’ve chosen Multiple Textbox

Step 6 Formatting the Question

Format how the question looks and operates SurveyMonkey

  • Scroll for other options
  • Sort/Randomize Input Boxes (optional)  – good option for multiple choice and it mix up the choices so people, don’t just click the top answer
  • Validate Text (optional) does this need to answered to validate result, I rarely use
  • Require Answer to Question (optional)   - force respondent to answer question
  • Change Question Size & Placement (optional) – Allows you to change the size of the box and how many characters and how many lines

Step 7 Repeat Process with another Question

Step 8 Add Page After

  • You can add a thank you page if want at the end of the survey

Step 9 Collecting Responses

You created the survey now you have to send it to your clients

How do you collect responses in SurveyMonkey?

You have 3 options

  • Create a link to send in your own email message or to place on a webpage
  • Upload your own emails and have us send a survey invitation
  • Create a popup invitation for your webpage

I prefer to use option 1 and create a link, it’s the easiest way because you can add it to an Html page or add it to your email.

Step 10 Create a Link

  • Select Sending Survey Link in an Email? or Placing Survey Link on a Webpage?
  • Copy and paste into notepad

Step 11 You Need to Set Up Collector Settings

You can select differnet Collector setting - SurveyMonkey

  • On the left hand side 5 buttons
  • Change settings – Change the settings for the collecting process
  • Allow Multiple Responses?-  Can be useful if people are sharing a computer
  • Allow Responses to be Edited? – If they make a mistake they can edit their answer
  • Display a “Thank You” Page? – Paid version only
  • Survey Completion – Completion Option: auto configured: Jumps to SurveyMonkey.com
  • Save IP Address in Results? – useful if you want to track IP addresses

Step 12 Change Restrictions

You can change the restrictions, like time limit - SurveyMonkey

It allows you to put cut off date for the survey or you can select the maximum number of responses.

Step 13 Add link to your email and send out to your list

Step 14 Analyze Results

You’ve sent out your email now you’ll want to analyse the results
